Angelina Jolie is the mother of six children, three of whom were adopted. Even though it’s hard to believe, the famous actress stated unequivocally that she never wanted to get pregnant, saying, “I never wanted to be pregnant.” I’ve never babysat before. “I’ve never considered myself a mother.” She altered her mind after her trip to Cambodia and began to see things in a new light.
Cambodia holds a particular place in Jolie’s heart because it is where she shot her blockbuster picture Tomb Raider in 2000. She fell in love with the people.
In 2001, she approached the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to become a goodwill ambassador after the country awakened her humanitarian side. “That journey sparked my realization of how little I understood and the start of my hunt for that knowledge,” she says. And if that wasn’t enough to cement her bond with Cambodia, she also paid a visit to an orphanage, where she met her first son, Maddox.
The Hollywood beauty was visiting a Cambodian orphanage with her then-husband, Billy Bob Thornton. When she came across baby Maddox, whose fate was about to alter. “As far as I gather from her, when she visited the place and saw Maddox. He smiled at her and got up instead of sobbing like all the other babies,” a former friend claimed. Because it affected her heart and she chose Maddox.”
Maddox’s life was not the only one that changed on that fateful day. The actress discovered her maternal epiphany and her ability to help needy children all across the world at that time.
It was difficult for a foreigner to adopt a Cambodian infant at the time due to baby trafficking in Cambodia. Jolie, who was having legal issues, sought out to Sarath Mounh, a friend and former Cambodian business associate. He added Maddox to his family tree in order for Jolie to officially adopt him from his Cambodian father.
Jolie legally adopted Maddox as a single parent on March 10, 2002. Instead of his birth name, Rath Vibol, she gave him the name Maddox.
At the age of 15, Maddox inspired his mother to make the Oscar-nominated film First They Killed My Father. The film depicts Cambodian human rights pioneer Luong Ung’s experience as a little girl during the Khmer Rouge’s cruel dictatorship. Maddox knew the Cambodian activist and wanted to record what was going on in his homeland.
She recalls Maddox’s involvement in the filmmaking process. “He read the script, helped with remarks, and was in the production meetings”. Jolie directed the film, and Maddox worked alongside her on it. So it allowed him to delve further into his country’s history and reconnect with his roots.
Angelina Jolie founded the Maddox Jolie Foundation in 2003. Later it became the Maddox Jolie-Pitt Foundation, because of her deep ties to Cambodia. It is dedicated to easing extreme rural poverty, environmental protection, and wildlife conservation in rural northwestern Cambodia. By associating Maddox’s name with Cambodia, she is demonstrating that she is teaching him to be a proud Cambodian.
